TESE is a testicular biospy which is performed before an IVF cycle to look for live sperm in azoospermic men. Azoospermia is the absence of sperm in the ejaculate. Azoospermia is present in 1% of the male population and in 10% of men who come to a fertility clinic. After obtaining testicular tissue, a tiny piece is put in culture medium and if there are live sperm they will be retrieved in the medium. The sperm is then frozen for later use.
The woman then undergoes an IVF cycle and after ovocyte retrieval, the sperm is thawed and each egg is microinjected with one spermatozoon.
