Why is there egg donation?
There are many couples that cannot have children because the woman’s ovaries do not have viable eggs or she does not want to use her eggs because ahe has a genetic disease. An alternative treatment for these women is egg donation. Egg donation is a generous act from one woman to another.
What are the requisites to become an egg donor?
The requisites to become an egg donor are:
- Be between 18-35 years old.
- Have had sex.
- Be mentally and physically healthy.
- Not indulging in drug or alcohol abuse.
- Not be a smoker.
- Have no personal or family histoy of hereditary disease.
- Have no gynecological diseases.
- Not be a carrier of sexually transmitted diseases.
- Normal psychological evaluation.
What do I have to do to become an egg donor?
The donor has to undergo ovarian stimulation which will be explained in the first talk the donor has with the doctor.
Is egg donation legal?
According to Spanish law egg donation is legal but must be anonymous. This means that neither the donor nor the child will know the identity of the donor nor will the recipient know the identity of the donor.
Can eggs be bought or sold?
Donation in Spain is altruistic, which means that eggs can be neither bought nor sold. A monetary compensation is given to the donor for the time and effort needed to donate eggs.
I think I want to be an egg donor, what do I have to do?
First you must call and ask for an appointment at the clinic. The doctor will explain in detail about egg donation and will give you a brochure explaining the process. We then give you a few days to think about it and if you want to go ahead we will start testing you. If all the tests come back normal a recipient will be matched with you.
